In this Blog post, I will help you understand what toxins your career may have exposed you to.

I’ll get granular with 10 career types, discuss the toxins each is exposed to, and state potential effects. Stick to the end, and I’ll give you some solutions. Keep in mind that the lay person is also exposed to these toxins in our every day lives.

4 things you need to understand first

  1. There are three ways we are exposed to toxins…
Through the AIR we breathe: air fresheners, fabric softeners detergents, mold, pesticides, to name a few consuming them.
Through our mouth, what we CONSUME: the water, food sprayed grown in…medicines!
    Thorough our Skin
  2. We don’t know WHEN the effects of toxic will show up…immediately or even decades later…
  3. There are 7 categories of toxins and 8 ways that they affect us.

    The 7 Categories Of Toxins

    1. Food Toxins – that we can detect, create, and eliminate ourselves.
    2. Toxins in our Air, Water, Food and Medicine – These are not naturally occurring.
    3. Toxins Occurring In Nature –  Mycotoxin/mold, Aquatic biotoxins, Ciguatera, Solanaceae and Chaconine Lectins, Lyme disease
    4. Electromagnetic Fields, or EMFs – which interfere with our mitochondria.
    5. Chemical, Petrochemical, and Heavy Metal Toxins – found in everyday products.
    6. Mental and Emotional Toxins – We can heal these!
    7. Bacteria, Virus, Yeast, Candida and Parasites – Their presence can be detected, and they can be eliminated.

The 8 ways TOXINS affect us…

    1) Toxins drastically reduce the body’s ability to detoxify – The more combinations of toxins there are in the body, the worse the effect.
    2) Organ damage
    3) DNA damage/Quickening aging
    4) Change DNA
    5) Interfere or block hormones/endocrine disruptors
    6) Damage cell membranes
    7) Displace minerals I’ll talk about in an upcoming video, called heavy metals and minerals, their creepy relationship…
    8) Poison enzymes and bacteria

So now, we come to the 4th thing you need to understand BEFORE I dive into potential toxic exposure from your career, then remember to stick with me, I’ll provide some solutions, including 2 superhero ways of detecting toxins and efficient ways to cleanse these toxins…

Keep in mind though there are some categories that I will not focus on in this report. I am not talking about Mental and Emotional Toxins, Food Toxins, Toxins Occurring In Nature, or Bacteria, Virus, Yeast, Candida and Parasites. I will be focusing more on categories 1, 5 and 4 (EMF’s) makes a cameo appearance. 1.Toxins in our Air, Water, Food and Medicine, 5. Chemical, Petrochemical, and Heavy Metal Toxins.

4. Our toxic burden begins BEFORE we are born. Recent advances in science have shown us that the stress and toxins (chemicals, solvents, plastics, heavy metal toxins, etc.) that you are exposed to will affect ALL future generations[1]. In fact, everything you do is stored in your DNA and in some manner passed to your descendants. Think about how our ancestors have experienced and survived intense, emotional, stressful events and circumstances, such as: natural disasters, accidents, droughts, famine, stressful pregnancies, divorce, rape, The Holocaust, mental illness and the PTSD that goes with these stressful events. These all affect future generations.

The experiences, events, and circumstances our grandparents were exposed to affect us. For example, drought and famine altered their DNA, and subsequently, our DNA. This unexpected phenomenon has given rise to a new field called transgenerational epigenetics, or the study of inherited changes. These changes cannot be explained by traditional genetics. One example of a toxin which is extremely persistent in the environment and in the body is Teflon….25 generations…

Cashiers – (handle thermo-sensitive paper receipts all day which are known to cause cancer, mixed with using hand sanitizer, exponentially increases risk of cancer)

Dr. John Warner of the Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry says,

“There’s more BPA (bisphenol A) in a single thermal paper receipt than the total amount that would leach out from a polycarbonate water bottle used for many years.”

BPA is the all pervasive,  breast cancer-causing, universal ‘sterilizer’ it lowers fertility, even trace amounts may  cause  harm in  the reproductive, cardiovascular, neurological and immune systems. And use of hand sanitizer WITH receipts allows this cancer causing toxin to be absorbed 100x and cross the blood brain barrier.

If this concerns you, and it should, I’ll share the video where I talk about this BELOW[2]

Common products that may contain BPA include:

  • Items packaged in plastic containers
  • Canned foods
  • Toiletries
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Thermal printer receipts
  • CDs and DVDs
  • Household electronics
  • Eyeglass lenses
  • Sports equipment
  • Dental filling sealants

It’s worth noting that many BPA-free products have merely replaced BPA with bisphenol-S (BPS) or bisphenol-F (BPF)

Pilots/Flight attendants In-Flight Hazards and Solutions

An excerpt from day 29 of my Serious Cleanse 30-Day Challenge called “Travel Hacking”

Did you know that US Flight Crews Have Higher Cancer Rates than the General Population?

If cancer rates are higher in flight crews, it stands to reason that they are also higher in people who fly frequently. Air travel is definitely convenient but there are some serious health hazards associated with flying.

In fact, a study recently published by Harvard [2] revealed that cancer rates are a whopping 50% higher in flight attendants than in a similar group of women who are not flight attendants.

In this interesting study, data from 5,300 flight attendants were compared to a group of 2,700 people from similar socioeconomic backgrounds.

The study also revealed substantially higher rates of other health issues and disorders, including anxiety, sleep disorders, many types of cancers, pneumonia, chronic pain (back, neck, arm, wrist), sinus infections and more. The study also revealed significant reproductive implications in the in-flight crews such as miscarriage, preterm birth, fetal abnormality and infertility. I wish they could all do the Serious Cleanse 30-Day Challenge!

It is interesting to note that the flight crews had high rates of illness despite an otherwise healthy lifestyle. “The elevated cancer rates were observed despite other indications of good-health behaviors, such as low levels of smoking and obesity.” Female flight attendants had elevated breast cancer rates – about 50% higher than the general population control group.

“Cancer rates in male flight attendants were nearly 50 percent higher for melanoma and about 10 percent higher for nonmelanoma skin cancers compared with men from the general population group, according to the findings.” The longer their careers, the higher their chances of developing cancer. According to the study, “Our study findings contribute to the sparse literature on flight attendant health, which may also apply to passengers, especially frequent flyers.” [3]

Travel The Toxic Skies…7 Ways We Are Exposed:

  1. Damaging TSA x-ray/ backscatter machines
  2. Deadly fume events
  3. In-flight pesticide exposure
  4. Circadian rhythm disruption, overstimulation of the nervous system caused by the engine vibration
  5. Sluggishness  of the circulatory and lymphatic systems from and lack of movement in flight.
  6. Toxic lighting
  7. Recycled air/onslaught of germs, etc.

Air travel adds to our already overwhelmed toxic burden in a variety of ways. A seasoned pilot summarizes it well….“flying wears out the body. The pressurization followed by depressurization repeatedly, breathing recycled air, fume events, time spent at 30k+ feet with gamma rays/radiation, [results in] circadian rhythm disruption, and dehydration.”

If you are flight crew or a TSA agent, you may want to (seriously) consider finding another job
If you are a frequent air traveler, you should be concerned about the negative effects of flying, and take the measures to counteract them.

Asbestos

This one I am doing a little differently, I will talk about the toxin and the associated careers.

When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can become embedded in your lungs and lead to the formation of scar tissue. This scarring is known as asbestosis.

This scarring can make it difficult for you to breathe because it prevents your lung tissue from expanding and contracting the way they would normally do. Smoking makes it worse.

It takes between 10- 40 years after asbestos exposure for symptoms to show up. Many cases originate from workplace exposure to asbestos before federal laws regulating it were enacted in the mid-1970s.

Asbestosis (as-bes-TOE-sis) is a chronic lung disease caused by inhaling asbestos fibers. The symptoms of asbestosis commonly include shortness of breath, dry cough and swelling in the neck or face. This disease takes years to develop and can be life threatening

Occupational Asbestos Exposure

Occupational asbestos exposure is the No. 1 cause of meso-thee-lioma cancer. Repeated exposure to asbestos on the job puts workers at risk of several cancers and serious pulmonary diseases. Learn more about the occupations and industries that place people at risk of asbestos exposure.[5]

Top Five At-Risk Occupations for Asbestos Exposure

There are 75+ Occupational Groups Exposed Workers to Asbestos, these are only the top 5.

  1. Construction Worker
  2. Fire fighter
  3. Industrial Worker mechanics, foremen, trade laborers, chemical workers and machinery operators.
  4. Power Plant Worker
  5. Shipyard Worker

Cleaning; Janitors & House Cleaners

A study [6] showed that cleaning IS the new smoking.

This study goes on to say that house cleaning with conventional chemicals is the equivalent to smoking a pack a day for 10-20 years on respiratory health.

People who use these chemicals absorb them through their skin and inhale the fumes.

I use simple, effective non-toxic cleaning products in both my business and home. Vinegar and water and Bon Ami are my go-to cleaning products. We use non toxic laundry detergent and for extra disinfecting I use a Hydrogen Peroxide spray. Again, simple, effective, non-toxic and I don’t have to worry about them affecting my health down the line.

Cosmetologist/Hairdresser Salon Toxins

I got a haircut the other day and was reminded how salon workers and patrons both breathe in and absorb dangerous toxins during routine salon services.

Salon workers absorb many of the toxic chemicals through their skin and inhale fumes from hair dyes, hair sprays, and other products inhaled directly into their lungs.

Salon workers are at an even greater risk because of their continued, excessive exposure. Remember, combinations of chemicals are far worse than one exposure. In addition, anyone in the environment is at risk and anyone who comes into contact with an exposed or touched item. The transfer may easily occur to a brush, cigarettes, food or drink item, etc…

Hair dye [7] has long been known to cause Acute Leukemia, bladder cancer, breast cancer[8],  blood cancer[9], and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma[10]. There are reports of adverse health conditions in salon workers, include; different types of cancer to reproductive problems, skin conditions, and dermatitis.

This one really hits home for me because we had a very important family member who was a cosmetologist and a house cleaner. She also regularly used Nice and Easy [11] on her hair for many years. Sadly she didn’t know that many people have died from acute leukemia as a result of using Nice and Easy hair dye.

When she was just 48, her life was cut short. She was afflicted with acute leukemia, and died within 3 days of the diagnosis. She left behind 3 children and 2 grandchildren. It was so sad. I feel so heavy in my heart as I think about this, but I had to share this so we can warn and prevent others from being exposed.

In their report, “Beauty and It’s Beast,” “Women’s Voices of the Earth” detailed some issues and challenges faced by salon workers, including exposure to acetone, toluene, ammonia and methyl methacrylate in hair dyes and bleaches, permanent wave solutions and acrylic nail products.

The report documented an increased risk of delivering low-birth-weight babies, miscarriages or delivering children with cleft palates and other birth defects. Cosmetologists also experience a higher risk of depression compared to other jobs and have a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease, pre-senile dementia, and motor neuron disease. I personally know a handful of cosmetologists who have had different types of cancers…Do you?

Dentists/Mercury

Did you know that amalgam fillings AKA silver fillings contain about 50% mercury? [1] Mercury is known as a cumulative neurotoxin.

Might mercury toxicity be a reason that dentistry as a profession have the highest suicide rate of any profession?

It is a fact that there is no known safe level[13] of mercury exposure. Yet, “silver” fillings are commonplace in the U.S. and have been used in more than 100 million American mouths! This is so, despite the fact that time and time again, research shows[14] that amalgam fillings expose people to the harmful effects of mercury. FDA Hearings on mercury Dental Amalgam Safety.[15]

Mercury is so toxic it arrives (and has to leave) in biohazard transportation with skull and crossbones wrapping! The FDA says it’s safe to put this in your mouth but once removed it is placed in the same biohazard disposal system.

My concern is that Dentists are exposed to this neurotoxin day in and day out.

Did you know that “People who have eight to ten fillings have 100-200 times more mercury two hours after eating in their exhalation vapors than industrial facilities are allowed to emit.”

One day, I got to thinking, what happens when you kiss them, someone with eight to ten fillings? Or sleep in the same room with them? Or are on a BUS, PLANE or in a RESTAURANT!?

Remember, exhaling vapors… If mercury is in one person’s saliva and that person gives their partner a passionate kiss, the person on the receiving end is going to receive a nice dose of heavy metals poisoning!

If you have mercury fillings in your mouth, make sure you have them extracted by a dentist who has been trained to extract them. Because taking them out in the wrong way could lead to more absorption…Replace your amalgam fillings; talk to your dentist about using the SMART method.
